Your grandparents (or great-grandparents) sang about marijuana

Victoria Spivey singing Dope Head Blues in 1927.  For some reason, the song is played over clips from a Betty Boop cartoons, which, though entertaining, appear to be actually unrelated with the song.

I’m thinking this will be a series of posts because there are so many old songs about drugs.  Maybe it shouldn’t surprise me, but it does.  Anyway, enjoy this initial sampler.  Apart from being about marijuana, and therefore culturally interesting, these songs are also pretty good.  Despite being an avid blues fan, I’m not familiar with the work of Larry Adler or Victoria Spivey – off to spotify to learn!
